Head Lice Treatment

Head lice are a common problem. The eggs laid by head lice are called nits. These eggs attach themselves to the hair shaft and hence are difficult to remove. The nits hatch in about a week’s time and new lice are born. Head lice spread rather quickly through contact with other affected individuals. The can also spread through personal items such as clothes and hair brushes. Girls are more susceptible head lice than boys. Treatment of head lice should be done early since the problem can spread to others rapidly.

The symptoms arising from head lice usually begin with a great deal of itching on the scalp. Tiny red bumps may also appear on the scalp and around the neck and shoulders. Due to continuous scratching, the bumps may rupture and ooze and form crusts later. Natural head lice treatment involves smothering the head lice by applying substances such as mayonnaise, petroleum jelly and olive oil to the hair. Any one of these may be applied to the hair and left on overnight. You can cover the head with a shower crap to prevent dripping. The hair should then be washed the next morning and combed thoroughly to remove the lice. You can repeat the process after ten days. This can be a very messy process and the degree of effectiveness varies. Some people believe that the smothering as such is not effective and it is the combing out of the nits and lice that really does the trick.

Other head lice treatments involve the use of herbal remedies. These hair care remedies are known to be an effective treatment for head lice. Essential oils such as tea tree oil are believed to be effective in treating lice, although its use it not recommended for young children. Another beneficial natural head lice treatment involves the use of almonds. Ten to twelve almonds may be soaked in water and then a paste may be prepared. After adding a few drops of lemon juice to the paste, it may be applied to the scalp and allowed to dry for a couple of hours. This is known to work well in removing nits and lice. Lemon juice may be mixed with garlic paste and applied on the scalp. This should be left on for about half an hour and then wash with cool water. Another effective remedy for treating head lice is the application of apple cider vinegar, garlic juice and lemon juice.
