Dry Flaky Scalp

Dry flaky scalp is a very common problem. It is often confused with dandruff and other conditions. There are many reasons that can cause dry or flaky scalp. Weather changes like change in the humidity level can affect can affect scalp moisture and cause flaking. Sometimes medications may cause dry scalps. You must start hair treatment for dry/flaky scalps as sebum build up can clog hair follicles resulting in an early hair loss. Avoid over washing after swimming as it can harm your scalp. For people living in low humidity area with dry climate hair spray containing alcohol could be problematic.

Dry flaky scalp is commonly caused by seborrheic dermatitis; a mild form of a skin condition in which the scalp becomes red and inflamed and caused the skin to flake off. It may also be caused due to psoriasis; type of skin disorder where the skin cells grow faster than normal, causing the scalp to thicken and flake. Psoriasis may be caused due to problem in immune system. Dandruff may also cause dry flaky scalp. However the actual reason for dry flaky scalp is not yet known. Dry flaky scalp may also be heredity. It is worsen by cold weather and hot dry air.

If you are sure that your dry flaky scalp is not due to dandruff than massage your scalp with any moisturizer on the eve of the day you plan to wash your hair. If your scalp is very dry than use any non-volatile oil. Frequently brush using a good hair brush or a comb to remove flakes. To improve blood circulation to your scalp, massage the scalp regularly. Never use alkaline based shampoo. Eat diet rich in vitamins like Vitamin C and vitamin B they are essential for a healthy scalp and healthy hair.
